Mary Katherine Keown is a freelance journalist and photographer. Specializing in features and in-depth photo-essays, Ms. Keown has been motivated by her work in the majority world to raise awareness of issues of social justice, gender rights and climate change. She aims to promote greater inter-cultural understanding. Her reportage includes the impact of climate change on Maasai pastoralists in northern Tanzania; the challenges facing multi-generational households in East Africa; the unique vulnerabilities of women in Tanzania to HIV infection; the effects of PTSD on war veterans; the implications of cultural tourism; the link between female genital cutting and HIV transmission; HIV/AIDS in northern Ontario; and homelessness in Sudbury, Ont. Ms. Keown’s work has been published in the New Internationalist, the Sudbury Star, Women’s e-News, Verge magazine, the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, the Toronto Star, Intercultures magazine, the Tanzanian Guardian and the East African. She is also a non-profit communications and mobilization specialist, with experience in Egypt, Tanzania, Rwanda and Canada. She has worked in the fields of media development, mental health, women’s rights, HIV and AIDS, and climate change.
